Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
An investigative look into the private and public life of Al Gore reveals that he is a compassionate and concerned individual striving to make the world a better place. His father was a congressman from whom Al learned a lot about politics and government. Al served for about half a year in Vietnam. Although only a combat journalist, he was deeply moved by the many troubling events he witnessed. When he returned home, he could have easily become a successful writer but felt compelled to do more. Rather than merely write about problems, he wanted to help solve them. He decided to enter law school, and in 1976 he was elected to Congress. This book portrays Al as a strong, intelligent and successful individual. These qualities are never more evident then when he conceded the presidential election of 2000 by stating that "we will stand behind our new president." The photographs further help to convey him as a gracious and caring human being. The book is part of the "Gateway Biographies" series. 1999, Millbrook Press, $22.90 and $8.95. Ages 10 up. Reviewer: Denise Daley
School Library Journal
Gr 3-5-This glowing biography of the vice president opens with the story of his son's serious accident. Stefoff reports that while at the boy's hospital bedside, the then U.S. senator from Tennessee ``thought about young Albert and Albert's three sisters, and about all the other children in the world. What kind of future would they have? Would the earth be a safe, comfortable home for them when they grew up?'' Followed by a segue into the man's concern for the environment, this section rings maudlin if not false. The remainder of the book covers the subject's youth up to and including his political career, and continues to paint an overwhelmingly positive picture of Gore and his family. A mix of good-quality, black-and-white and full-color photos are well placed and make for an attractive package. A pleasant, slick, if adulatory, introduction to the ``number two official of the United States government.''- Rosie Peasley, Empire Union School District, Modesto, CA
