Overview

In late September 2001, Samira, a young Afghani woman, embarks upon an arcane journey into the harsh mountains of her homeland where she and her companions face perils along the way; but their journey abruptly ends and a new one begins when they discover the hidden cavern of Jihad leaders.

Early upon the journey, difficulties arise for Samira and her companions. The charismatic and outspoken Samira takes charge, but Haifa, a strong-willed Hazara woman, resists her. In their dust, turmoil unfolds within a country at war. In their path, dangers escalate as the military retreats and winter sets in.

The leaders flee to their hidden cavern in the mountains. The top leader, known as the Sheik, is in denial of defeat and struggles to maintain control of his forces. His psychopathic nature, once his strength, fosters obsession and paranoia. As he grasps at the straws of sanity, his demise threatens all.

Samira, Haifa, and their companions must inhabit the eerie cavern. Samira befriends a boy of eleven years, whom she keeps from the Sheik. A fighter falls in love with Haifa and defects to protect her. Together, they soon realize they must escape to survive, while the Sheik, pinned by the enemy, must escape to avoid his own captivity.

Al-Oda immerses innocent lives into war and conflict. These individuals rise to meet seemingly insurmountable challenges, but still bond in friendship and love even as they struggle against those that do harm.
