School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 4-7-Full-color photographs and a variety of maps, charts, and graphs all effectively support these texts. Following an information-filled introduction, "Fast Facts" appear in a chapter called "Almanac." In addition to the information students often request, there are additional nuggets of interest labeled "Biggest, Best, and Most," such as, "Alabama introduced the Mardi Gras celebration to the Western Hemisphere" and "Iowa is home to the nation's shortest and steepest scenic railway." Throughout the books, quotes from natives are interspersed, and a "Notable People" chapter is included. The time lines show national as well as state events. The spread entitled "Festivals and Fun for All" lists state events and attractions with Web sites. Useful, attractive social-studies enhancements.-Alida F.
