Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Cathy Greenwood
"Eyewitness Classics" has produced another winner for young and old. This book not only retells the rich narrative of Shahrazade and her famous tales; it also provides lush illustrations. The illustrations are especially fascinating because they not only provide visual representations of the stories' events, but also of objects and background stories about the time and culture, with accompanying text that makes this a good resource for research. There is a lot going on in this book-adults and children will find something new with each reading... but wasn't that part of Shahrazade's plan after all?
Children's Literature - Children's Literature
How the Arabian Nights came together is a matter of debate, but this retelling of three of the stories introduces the early reader to the magic of the tales. The opening of the book explains briefly about storytelling a thousand years ago in the Arabian Empire and how Queen Shahrazad saved her life by telling her husband, the king, stories every night. The last section gives a brief summary of ancient Arabian life and how it related to the stories. "Aladdin and the Lamp" and "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves," two of the more famous of the tales, are recounted in spirited simple sentences that children should enjoy. A lesser-known story, "The Garden of Enchantments," rounds out the selection with the tale of a brave and resourceful young woman Farizad. The illustrations capture the oriental flavors of medieval Chinese and Islamic life. The colored drawings range from intricate, delicate detail reminiscent of illuminated manuscripts to candid pictures of the characters. Also included are authentic photos of artifacts, such as an ancient oil lamp and a glossary. There are a few editing oversights (e.g., the pronunciation of Shahrazad) and this version does include some violence. 2000, Dorling Kindersley, Ages 7 to 9, $12.95 and $3.95. Reviewer: Carol Raker Collins

Gr 2-3-Simple retellings of "Aladdin and the Lamp," "The Garden of Enchantments," and "Ali Baba." The selections are framed by two brief chapters that provide background information about Shahrazad and Arabian society. The print is large and easy to read, and the lovely color illustrations have an Asian flavor that suits the stories nicely. Small, captioned color photos and reproductions provide background information about particular plot elements, e.g., holy man, Persian armor, sesame. Though the narratives are adequate, they lack drama or suspense and do little justice to the magical tales.-Lisa Smith, Lindenhurst Memorial Library, NY Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
