Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
A detailed accounting of the events and conditions leading up to the battle, the battle itself, and how it shaped the future of Texas is given by the author. The role of many of the known western heroes—like Jim Bowie, Davy Crockett and Sam Houston—is provided. The military strategy and the lack of it by both the Spaniards and the Texans is told with clarity. Some of the information comes from documents, soldiers' diaries, letters, and maps drawn by the soldiers. It is not ancient history where places and records of events are missing or nonexistent; for young people this is background about Texas history. They are able to visit the place where the battle was actually fought. They can see, feel, and touch the actual battle site. That is what is so wonderful about American history. It is still here. Additional resources are included. This is part of the "American Battlefield" series. 2004, Enchanted Lion Books, Ages 13 to 16.
