Overview

Since Alaska is so large and its options so varied, this guide is organized primarily to help travelers zero in on the activity or activities that most appeal to them. The first ten chapters focus solely on adventure travel, each devoted to a single activity. The five regional chapters that follow focus mainly on the basics in a given area of the state — getting around, shopping, lodging, dining, and entertainment. The objective is not to provide the most information about destinations or attractions, but rather, the most useful information. Any destination or outfitter listed here has made the cut by proving itself a wonderful place to visit or a reliable company with which to do business.

Melissa DeVaughn has penned the definitive book on traveling in Alaska for the adventurous. I learned so much about this wonderful part of our country just in the first few pages. It is packed with information that anyone going to Alaska can use, even if you aren't interesting in outdoor adventure. If you are, however, you will find this book immensely valuable. The detail is incredible, listing resources of all kinds, from outfitters to places to stay to tour company information to anything else you could possibly want to know. There are rating guides that can help you decide who to help you make your adventure vacation a reality. The book is arranged by area, with complete lists of all you can do in each area of the state. I think this guide is a must for anyone headed to Alaska!

What a great travel guide...It's absolutely perfect for those of us who like to get off the tour bus, away from the garishly dressed tourists and get out there to really see the beautiful lands in Alaska. Some of the suggestions and tips were ones I'd either not thought about or had never heard before. Great fun and now I look forward to taking my sister to her dream destination. Edit: the only thing I *didn't* like about this guide was the page layout/design. It didn't really draw the eye to the appropriate passages, so some of you in the "internet generation" may have to train yourself to do more than just skim a chapter.
