Children's Literature - Vicki Foote
The state of Alaska is thoroughly explored in this nonfiction text that is part of the “America the Beautiful: Third Series Revised Edition.” It contains a detailed amount of information about the geography, government, people, and economy. Charts, graphs, maps, and timelines enhance these facts. Photographs and illustrations are plentiful and interesting. FAQ’s provide questions and answers, such as how many lakes there are in Alaska. There are frequent listings of “Words to Know” and their definitions. The chapters include essential facts about the first people, settlements, changes, and the culture. The first chapters cover the government and economy. A “Travel Guide” chapter has maps and things to do with brief descriptions of notable places. A “Project Room” contains suggestions for classroom projects, such as illustrating the lyrics to the Alaska state song. A timeline lists United States events alongside Alaskan events from the years 1492 to 2009. Pages at the conclusion include a glossary, fact facts, the state song, natural areas, historic sites, and other resources, including an index. This text is excellent for research purposes for schools and libraries. Reviewer: Vicki Foote; Ages 10 up.
