Overview

We fought desperately trying to free the 27 foot, heavily loaded fishing boat from the sandbar, and keep it from rolling over. Paul zachar, his wife, his youngest son, who was about five, and me were planning to take the boat up the Kvichak River into Lake Iliamna, Alaska. As we headed toward the mouth of the Kvichak from Bristol Bay, we spotted several sandbars. We were trying to locate the main channel and avoid the dangerous areas. About 300 yards ahead of us we spotted the strong tide pushing the water up toward the river and rolling over some barely-covered sandbars. Immdeiately, Paul turned the boat and pulled the throttle wide open, trying to run from the impending sandbars. The strong, icy cold tide was too much and we were slammed sideways into a barely submerged sandbar. With our oars we pushed and pulled trying to keep the rushing water from rolling over the boat, but it was too strong and we were losing the battle. We were about to be tossed into the swift, rushing water and to an icy-cold grave.
This is about living and teaching in an Alaskan Indian village (Nondalton) during 1958-1960. Summer of 60 is about mishaps during salmon commercial fishing in the dangerous waters of Bristol Bay, Alaska.
The first part is a litle about my early life in South Dakota.
It contains 70 pages and almost 70 colored photos. If you do not have color they will be in black & white. This is a shortened and condensed version of my earlier book of the same title. It contained 191 page about 94 colored photos.
