Editorial Reviews

Emily Melton
In this beautifully written picture book for older children set during the Renaissance, Alberic, a young peasant, decides to seek his fortune. He becomes an apprentice to a stained glass maker, planning eventually to create the most wonderful stained glass the world has ever seen. Alberic works hard, but when the time comes for him to craft his masterpiece, his work is merely competent. Not discouraged, Alberic moves on from city to city, seeking to become a master craftsman, but he always fails. Years later, tired and discouraged, he stops in a village and begins telling of his adventures and giving advice to the villagers based on his travels and experiences. Alberic's wisdom comes to the attention of the king, who rewards Alberic with great wealth. Even though Alberic believes this is what he really set out to find, he's unhappy. Only when he acknowledges that the journey itself is more important than the destination is he able to discover what truly makes life worthwhile. Young readers will learn an important lesson about life, while adults will smile wryly at the story's universal truth. But readers of all ages will enjoy the enchanting, magical adventure that Juster has spun as well as his beautifully crafted, lyrical writing style. Even if the text were less lovely, the book would be worth buying for Baskin's wondrous watercolor illustrations.
