Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 10 Up-This title opens with a 20-page biographical sketch followed by a collection of 19 essays, arranged by topic, from a wide array of sources. The articles-from Time magazine on one extreme and a treatise on quantum physics on the other-vary considerably in interest and accessibility. Some are excerpts, and there is a lot of repetition. The section on Einstein's physics is extremely complex, and difficult for nonscientists to comprehend. Many unfamiliar words (capillarity, dystopian, helot, Yiddishe) and references (Eton, the Oppenheimer affair, Saul Paul) are not explained. Perhaps the most useful parts of the book are the Appendix of Documents, the chronology, and the extensive (though dated) list for further research. Only AP and college physics students are likely to appreciate Albert Einstein; most young adults will prefer John B. Severance's Einstein: Visionary Scientist (Clarion, 1999).-Ann W.
