Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Elizabeth D. Schafer
Born in the Dominican Republic, powerful hitter Albert Pujols grew up in a community that embraced baseball. Pujols admired his father, who had gained fame in that country's baseball leagues, and planned to play baseball professionally. Scouts invited teenaged Pujols to major league tryout camps, but he was not offered a contract. In 1996, Pujols moved to Independence, Missouri, and played baseball for Fort Osage High School, which won a 1997 baseball state championship, and then for Maple Woods Community College. In 1999, the St. Louis Cardinals drafted Pujols who first played with several minor league teams. By 2001, Pujols's record-setting performances in major league games earned him the National League's Rookie of the Year title. Pujols was the 2004 National League Championship's Most Valuable Player and 2005 National League Most Valuable Player. His skills helped the Cardinals attain the 2006 World Series victory. Pujols achieved being the first major league player scoring over thirty home runs every season for seven consecutive years. Illustrations include a Wheaties box depicting Pujols. Related topics, such as the Buddy Walk for Down syndrome fundraising, which Pujols supports, are featured in sidebars. In addition to Pujols's 2001 to 2007 statistics, a chronology, glossary, and websites for Pujols's foundation and his fans are provided in this "Baseball Superstars" series biography. No endnotes clarify quotations and factual sources. Numerous Wikipedia entries weaken the bibliography. Reviewer: Elizabeth D. Schafer
