Editorial Reviews

Criticas
K-Gr 3-Originally published in German in 1999, this is a tale of friendship, tolerance, and belonging. Life on a farm is good, with plenty of food and water, a cool mud puddle to wallow in, and a perch with a view for the rooster. The chickens and the pigs keep a polite distance between one another while secretly nursing resentments. It takes the collaboration of the outcasts\ Alberto is an albino pig and Lila is now too old to lay eggs\to bring the two groups together. Their friendship, at first causing great scorn and merriment, ultimately saves the day when they manage to outsmart the fox that begins terrorizing the farm. The attractive watercolor illustrations appear in an assortment of different spaces on the pages, providing readers with the right amount of visual variation. The somber color palette is used to convey the nocturnal setting of much of the story. The text lends itself well to story time as the vocabulary and the sheer number of words could be daunting to beginning readers. Competent independent readers will enjoy the challenge of this well-translated text. Recommended for all collections.Maria Otero-Boisvert, "Criticas" Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
