All Music Guide - James Leonard
Here Hopkinson Smith, the poet of pluck, takes up five different kinds of lutes plus a vihuela de mano and a Baroque guitar, each of which sounds fantastic in his hands. Whether it's a 13-course Baroque lute for Bach and Weiss; an 11-course Baroque lute for Mouton, Gaultier, or de Gallot; a 10-course Renaissance lute for Kapsperger; an 8-course Renaissance lute for Dowland; a 6-course renaissance alto lute for Attaingnant; a vihuela de mano for Mudarra and de Narváez; or a Baroque guitar for Sanz and Guerau, Smith is consistently and constantly extraordinary.
Smith's tone is translucent, his technique is flawless, and his taste is exemplary. Even more impressive, Smith is his own man yet wholly at one with the music, his interpretations thoroughly thought-through yet natural. On this 25-year retrospective program starting with his intensely soulful 1980 recording of Mouton's "La Mallassis" and ending with his sprightly and doleful 2004 recordings of Dowland's "Frogg Galliard" and "Lachrimae Pavan," Smith proves himself one of the greatest performing musicians on any instrument. No matter when the recording was made, the sound here is uniformly outstanding: clear, immediate, and unquestionably present.
