Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Greg M. Romaneck
Why is the use of alcohol so prevalent among high school and college students? What is alcohol and how does it affect our physical functioning? What is binge drinking and why do young people engage in it? How does alcohol abuse affect both those who engage in it and others? These, and many other questions related to the use of alcohol, are addressed in this highly readable book. Issues related to the social, political, and medical implications of teen alcohol usage are handled in a concise yet thorough manner. This book provides the reader with valuable and balanced information concerning a vital societal issue. The risks of becoming involved in traffic accidents, unplanned/unwanted sexual behavior, aggression, and other dangerous actions are detailed. Alcoholism, and common rationalizations regarding its existence, are described in a manner that is forthright without preaching. This book is an excellent primer on the topic of alcohol, its effects, and common myths regarding teen drinking. Also included is a comprehensive listing of resources inclusive of major national or regional organizations. This is a book that could be very beneficial to both teens and adults working in the area of alcohol prevention.
School Library Journal
Gr 5 Up-Beginning with basic statistics on alcoholism, the authors move on to a look at the confusing messages coming at teens from the media, friends, and even parents. The different types of liquor are described and the physical and medical effects of alcohol consumption are presented clearly and concisely, with a special emphasis on binge drinking. Appropriate space is devoted to alcoholism and its effects on the drinkers and those around them, with a separate chapter designed to help readers determine if they have a problem. The book is remarkably nonjudgmental, nonsensationalized, and compassionately objective in its presentation of information. A good update to Hyde's Alcohol: Uses and Abuses (Enslow, 1988; o.p.).-Joyce Adams Burner, Hillcrest Library, Prairie Village, KS Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
