This well-organized book is packed with attractive pictures and important information, including facts about alcohol, its history, the various types consumed today, and the dangers of drinking (e.g., too much, too young of an age while driving). Every few pages, the book offers a "Searching Question," such as "Is it right that others should pay for treatment [through health insurance premiums] that might not have been necessary if the patient had not abused alcohol for so long?" The reading level is slightly above eighth grade, but the book is designed to appeal to students in middle school, with an abundance of photographs and other illustrations, as well as short sections of one or two pages each on a variety of topics. The in-depth information that high school students might need for a report would have to be supplemented by other sources. The pictures show more males than females and decidedly more whites than people of color. The main text is supplemented with a glossary and reading lists, both print and web-based.
