Overview

Originally published in 1939, when A.A. membership numbered about one hundred, Alcoholics Anonymous has steadily grown in readership. By the time the second edition appeared in 1955, membership had reached over 150,000, and the Big Book, A.A. members’ fond title for their basic text, had reached a distribution of more than 300,000. At the time of the third edition, in March 1976, the worldwide membership of A.A. was estimated at 1 million or more. The basic text, pages 1-164, which had been the foundation of recovery for so many alcoholics remained, and still remains, unchanged. The General Service Conference-approved fourth edition of Alcoholics Anonymous was first printed in October 2001 and has been reprinted 30 times since then. This edition includes 24 new stories that provide contemporary sharing for newcomers seeking recovery from alcoholism in A.A. during the early decades of the 21st century. Sixteen stories are retained from the third edition, including the “Pioneers of A.A.” section, which helps the reader remain linked to A.A.’s historic roots and shows how alcoholics get sober today. More than 30 million copies of the first four editions of the Big Book have been distributed. This is the only A.A.W.S.-authorized e-book version of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Although the text is the same as the hard copy edition, the page numbers are not. Also, the pages do not start or end in the same place. As this book is a text book and is used in a group study setting, it is very difficult to stay in sync with others using the hard copy.

I love this book and it has saved my life. It is nice to have the 4th addition on my nook but with out the correct page numbers it is not something that would be usefull in a meeting. If you're looking to read the 4th edition on your own then this would be great, but if you're wanting to bring something more compact to a meeting then your big book you are unfortunately still out of luck and will have to lug around your paper copy.

One of the most important things would be.....to have the page numbers correspond exactly with the Big Book in print,!! THIS DID NOT HAPPEN

For 75 years the first 164 pages of "Alcoholics Anonymous", together with appendices and forwards, have remained unchanged. That has now changed with the electronic version of the basic text. No longer can one find Chapter 5, How It Works, beginning on page 58 - it now starts on page 74. The Doctor's Opinion is not on page xxi - it is on page 25. How did AA World Services authorize this version?

People In A A find a great book for people with a drink problem.

I am disappointed that the pagination in the e-reader version of the Big Book does not correspond to the pagination of the hard-cover edition. It makes it hard to use the e-reader edition in meetings where reference is always to page numbers in the hard-cover edition.
