Children's LiteratureAlex loves to play hockey and he thinks he is the best player around. The bully of the school, Peter, approaches Alex and declares that he is the best player. Peter challenges Alex to a face off to see who the best player really is. Alex has five days until the face off to come up with a great team. He asks several of his friends to play with him, but they each have some sort of excuse as to why they can't play. Alex starts having bad dreams about the face off and is feeling overwhelmed by how dominating Peter's team looks. He takes down his entire collection of hockey memorabilia and throws his hockey jerseys in the garbage. The day before the face off he is walking to school looking dejected and comes upon his friend Emma. He tells her his problem and she comes up with an ingenious plan. The next day Emma and her gymnast friends show up to play against Peter's team. Peter thinks it is funny until the gymnasts are doing flips, somersaults and jumps around his team and are able to get by the big players. By the end of the game, Alex's team had won 48-0. Children will be able to empathize with Alex's dilemma and be rooting for him during his face off. This book is part of the "Read-it series." 2005, Picture Windows Books, Ages 5 to 8.
