This is a fascinating look at Alex "Ovie" Ovechkin, one of the best players in the NFL ...

Alexander Mikhaylovich Ovechkin, a wildly popular hockey player nicknamed Ovie, never did anything in a small way. In fact, when he was born he weighed more than 12 pounds! Coming from an athletic family, Alex seemed to have hockey in his blood. When he was five he saw his first game on the TV and "cried for his father to let him watch the game." When he started playing at the age of eight, there was no turning back. Alex was a hockey fanatic who would "stay [on the ice] for as long as eight hours at a time." His mother would send along a hot beverage and sandwiches to fuel him up. An unfortunate family tragedy made him even more determined to succeed in hockey and by the time he was 16 he was a member of Dynamo Moscow.

Dynamo was one of the best teams in Russia, but despite his success and fame in his home country, his goal was to become a member of the National Hockey League (NFL). Alex easily made the 2004 draft, but turmoil within the league caused the 2004-2005 season to be cancelled. Undeterred, Alex was willing to wait and when he was picked up by the Washington Capitals, he was offered an amazing "three-year contract worth $12 million." Alex was soon wildly successful, was awarded the Calder Memorial Trophy for the Rookie of the Year, and began to dazzle the hockey world. In this book you'll read about how he received Washington's key to the city, his amazing contracts, injuries, record breaking goals, awards, his intense popularity with fans, and you'll learn many other interesting things about Alex's amazing career.

This is a fascinating look at Alex "Ovie" Ovechkin, one of the best players in the NFL. This biography of Alex starts out on a fast paced note describing a game between the Capitals and the Toronto Maple Leafs. It describes his reputation on the ice as a man that roars when he plays, but one who can turn into a lamb when meeting his young fans. This biography, geared toward the younger reader, has large print. Unfamiliar words such as "defender" are printed in bold lettering and defined in the glossary. The book is generously illustrated with photographs, many of them action oriented. There are a few informative sidebars and most of the captions add interesting vignettes to this work. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary, selected career highlights (2001-2010), and additional recommended book and website resources to explore. Do you know what a hat trick is? You will by the time you finish this book!
