Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
Meet Axel, the bright red truck with monster-sized tires. Varoom, he is going out of town to a wide opened area where there are roads that he likes to bump, zoom, and climb. During his adventure, Axel catches a rock that is tumbling down the mountain and he brings it to the dump. After the story, enter the pages of Axel's garage where truck body parts and tools are labeled in a diagram. This story is part of the "I Can Read!" series of titles that focus on books to share with emergent readers. Along with the colorful pictures on every page, young children may enjoy the onomatopoeia and chime in during a read aloud experience. Some early readers may encounter some challenges with the vocabulary; however, their interest in reading about Axel the truck along with guidance may help to keep the early readers encouraged. There are other books about Axel the Truck for those children who want to continue with his adventures. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung

PreS-Gr 1—Axel, a monster truck, takes center stage in this beginning reader. There are plenty of vrooms, zooms, bumps, and bangs as he ploughs through town, flies off mountain trails, collects rocks sailing through the air and delivers them to a dump, and fills up with gas before returning home. Cheerful cartoons capture the action throughout. Similar in spirit to "Jon Scieszka's Trucktown" series (S & S), these books will appeal to the same readership-newly independent readers who can't get enough of humanlike vehicles out for adventure. As an added bonus, back matter features an ample array of labeled truck parts and garage tools.—Gloria Koster, West School, New Canaan, CT

This book is fabulous! The story is action packed, entertaining, and written in sentences and words children understand. The colors are so brilliant it keeps the children's eyes glued to the page. The voice in the 'read to me' version is just right too. It is powerful yet has a tender tone that will keep children comfortable.

My son loved the sound effects; we read it over and over again. I couldn't afford the Disney Cars book he'd chosen and this was a great substitute!

Good for when your voice is too tired for bedtime stories, but the read to me was WAY over done. I spent some time feeling sorry for the narrarator at the "VA-VROOM!s," but my sister loved it.

My son is a hesitant begining reader who also suffers from ADD. This book was just the thing we needed. The story was totally interesting to him and having the naration to help him he was not intimidated to try and read it. He wants to come back and read it over and over. On top of that it's FREE! Happy kid, happy Mom

Another nicely illustrated but utterly inane plotless and pointless children's book. The two year old asks for it and seems to enjoy the silly noises, but his mother can barely take it.

When I looked at this online it said it was free and now I get charged for this? I have had a lot of issues with this nook and Barns and Nobles doesn't do anything to help me I call and can not get anyone in america or who understands english. I hate this nook and Barns and Noble. I will never get anything from them again, what a joke!!!!!

My 2 1/2 year old daughter loves this book. She's a hugh Dora fan but for the last 2 weeks has picked Axel over Dora for her bedtime store. She loves the extra sound affects the "read to me" version has.
