Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Meagan Albright
The story of Goldilocks and the three bears has been told many times before, and this rendition, sanitized and simplified, is noteworthy only for the finger puppets, glove, and a felt board page in the back of the book. It is difficult to utilize the puppets and manipulate the fingers of the glove while holding the book; even simply wearing the glove and/or finger puppets while reading the story (as is recommended at the back of the book) leads to awkwardness and difficulty turning the pages. The glove has four dots of Velcro for the puppets and a pocket in both the front and the back to hide the puppets when they are not needed. The puppets are slightly too large to wear all four comfortably at once; for storytellers with small hands, the puppets tend to overlap each other and can be difficult to distinguish, particularly from a distance. The felt pages at the end of the book could be used for children to retell the story but the puppets must be pressed firmly to the board, and even then one strong shake will make half the puppets fall off the board. It should also be noted that the illustrations are bright and large and that the text is simple and easy to read. However, the text is slightly idiosyncratic (e.g., the words "ouch," "yuck," and "yum" are printed in italicized color). Overall, the interactive felt board, the finger puppets, and the glove are attractive and, to varying degrees, useful story-time tools, even if the text of the story is not up to par. This book could easily be used in story-time or added to a library's collection.

PreS-K-Harper brings two tales to life by providing an attractive PellonR glove with four finger puppets attached by Velcro. One plan is for the storyteller to read the board book while attaching the appropriate character puppet to the mitten. The glove has a pocket to hide characters until they are needed. In addition, each title has a final spread covered with PellonR so that children can retell the story by placing the pieces on the pictorial scene. Harper uses words that are simple enough for beginning readers and pictures large enough to be seen by a group. McDonald's colorful and cheery cartoonlike images are uncomplicated in design; she uses small dots for eyes and a smiling semicircle for mouths. Finally, the mitt attaches to the cover with another Velcro dot. Libraries with realia collections or storytime kits could include these two folktales for a pleasant variety.-Blair Christolon, Prince William Public Library System, Manassas, VA Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
