Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up-These biographies, which attempt to place the men and their accomplishments in the the context of their times, consist of a disorganized mishmash of fact, opinion, and outright speculation. Caesar contains chapters on Roman education, marriage, and entertainment, but covers no new ground. In Alexander, readers may find the chapters on Greek architecture, sports, and military equipment useful, but this kind of information is readily available and more accurate in many other books. The main problem with these titles, however, is their flippant, supercilious, and extremely annoying tone. It certainly is a good idea not to adopt a dry and pedantic manner when writing for young people about the classical world. However, a CNN-type invented interview with Aristotle, complete with a picture of a satellite dish, is glaringly out of place. In like manner, the "Action news team live coverage of Caesar's triumphant victory parade" falls flat. Some excellent illustrative material, including full-color reproductions of classical art, does not offset the deficiencies of these titles.-David Pauli, Missoula Public Library, MT
