Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Mary Loftus
A straightforward biography of the ancient King of Macedonia from the "Signature Lives" series, this is a nice-looking book with color illustrations, maps, photos, and fairly easy-to-read text. The life of Alexander is laid out in chronological order with the requisite litany of battles, leaders, betrayals, and conquests. This book is probably best for the reader who is new to the topic. As far as a nonfiction book for the educational market, it is pretty standard. Included are color illustrations, maps, and loads and loads of sidebars. There is a plethora of sidebars on topics from the Olympics to sarissa, a weapon of the Macedonians. Readers will also learn a bit of geography as they read about the spread of the Greek empire. The book concludes with an illustrated time line, additional resources, web site references, a glossary, and source notes.
