Overview

Ali and Ramazan are two boys from very different backgrounds who land in the same Istanbul orphanage. They quickly see eye to eye and fall into a loving relationship as children, bringing light to one another and to the other orphans in their dreary adopted home. Ramazan is a charmer, the school master’s favorite (which we later learn is not such a positive thing), the clown among the boys, and the only one with a real handle on things outside the orphanage’s walls. He takes Ali under his wing, and by the time they turn eighteen and are loosed onto Istanbul's mean streets, Ali and Ramazan are a pair. What happens next is both tragic and beautiful, a testament to love finding its way even among the least visible citizens on Turkey’s mean streets.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jody Little
Set in the harsh, impoverished streets of Istanbul, this novel tells the story of Ali and Ramazan, two boys who meet in an orphanage and find themselves immediately drawn to one another. Ramazan knows no other life before the orphanage. He is outgoing, smart, and confident; but he is also the toy of the school master. Ali comes to the orphanage after the brutal deaths of his parents. He is a large boy, shy and filled with demons. As the boys grow, their attraction intensifies; but so do their problems. When they are old enough to leave the orphanage, Ramazan makes his living the only way he knows: prostitution. Ali is pulled into the darkness of cheep street drugs: inhalents. After years apart, the two find each other once again; but their love for one another is not enough to escape the horrors of their pasts and their choices in the present. Graphic, violent storytelling make this book challenging to read at times. Characters' feelings and motivations are often unexplained and are difficult to comprehend. The tragic ending may leave readers grasping to find a small glimmer of hope within this nontradional love story.
