A horse-riding book set in Central America? Hmm. For some reason I missed the fact that Latin America is so mountainous - I guess because I had always thought of it in terms of its beaches. Mr. Caló made me dizzy sometimes as I rode his horses across the highlands, and he made me feel like I was really there in the middle of every horse race, jumping competition, and, ouch! every tumble. My mother is Honduran and should read this book. This novel is a must to be translated into Spanish.

Now this is a question that makes the synapses misfire! Where is the answer? In Zolen's, The Quixote Imbroglio, the restaurant owner tells Kyle and Carmen that they can spend every penny they have, and borrow every cent they can borrow and spend that, too, and still nothing will have changed for the poor, destitute, and abused in Latin America. When I read that section (early-on in the novel), that was the first time I almost wept. Reading Ali Zan And True Love now, I'm brought back to that same issue, with the same emotions, but this time with Arabian and Criollo horses.

I bought Ali Zan and True Love out of a sense of duty to read something on multicultural diversity. I really got a good dosing of Hispanic culture and the struggles of the North American to fit in! But I never thought I would read what is often a boring theme with such delight. Zolen Calo has a deep insight into the 'gringo' and 'Latino' alike, and his sentences go forward like the potato chip ad says, 'bet you can't read just one.' As for the horse action, I didn't buy the novel for it, but it is thrilling. Every horseback ride sent chills up and down my spine! Now I'll be reading The Quixote Imbroglio - the abstract sounded great. I wonder if it will have horses, too?
