Set primarily on Washington’s Vashon Island in Puget Sound, Dean’s first novel opens with Alice Croft breaking into Jack Calabrese’s home in order to steal his box of mementoes—a type of box, she asserts, “everyone has.” She doesn’t know Jack, but wants to learn if he’s the kind of man who will kill for her and, when he finds her in his house, the two soon discover they share an interest in sadomasochism. Alice and Jack target a potential murder victim, who remains unidentified until near the end; vignettes show the reader Alice’s horrific childhood, which may or may not have had a direct effect on her need to kill. Few will be surprised that the crime plot takes a backseat to Alice’s sex addiction and Jack’s increasingly abusive behavior toward her. This lurid combination of erotica and twisted psychopathy will not be to every taste. Agent: Jeff Kleinman, Folio Literary Management. (Jan.)

In the decade since she was orphaned, Alice Croft has been busy plotting her own true crime drama, but she is caught red-handed by the unsuspecting man she's been stalking, whom she's chosen to star unwillingly in this drama. Jack Calabrese, having spent time in prison for a crime he only wishes he'd committed against his wife, now confronts a beautiful thief, a woman he will not report because he's not finished with her. As the plot unfolds, readers will wonder: Who are the villains, and who are the victims? VERDICT Dean's debut is an absorbing, deeply disturbing, darkly erotic psychological thriller of tragedy and revenge. Fans of Agatha Christie, Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl), and Thomas Harris (The Silence of the Lambs) will love this disquieting novel.—Debbie Haupt, St. Charles City-Cty. Lib. Dist., St Peters, MO

Since aging out of the foster-care system, Alice has been looking for a man who can help her exact revenge on the person she blames for the bleak direction of her life, but finding him will lead them both on a path of obsession, pain and violence. Alice has quietly tracked a man she thinks might be a good candidate to help her seek vengeance for the tragedy that ruined her life. She breaks into his house to find more evidence, but as she's exploring Jack Calabrese's house, he catches her in the act. Angry but also intrigued, Jack secures her contact information then pursues her, and the two wind up in a relationship that combines a spectrum of romantic, obsessive and dangerous emotions. Alice's vengeful intentions are well-met in Jack, but her schemes have always been theoretical, and now that their fulfillment is a possibility, she may need to revisit her plans and her past. Jack is everything she's ever wanted, which could be a sign that she has to rethink her life, her desires and her salvation. Debut author Dean pens a haunting, intense novel that is at once psychologically compelling and emotionally unsettling. Taut pacing and skilled storytelling support a breathtaking plot and characters that are heartbreaking and horrifying yet somehow still accessible and sympathetic. With troubling psychological and sexual violence, this book is not for the faint of heart. It's scorching, disturbing, and tragic but well-crafted and impressively written.

The summary of this book does not do it justice, there is so muc

The summary of this book does not do it justice, there is so much more involved than stated there, it had me hooked from start to finish, I received it in the mail today, and finished it in one sitting, that is how gripping it was for me!

I will admit I did feel a bit of a disconnect from Alice, and that is why this is not a 5/5 book for me, some of her decisions I did not agree with, even knowing that she had a very tough upbringing and it is a situation that I cannot relate to at all, she just seemed very naive sometimes. Also Jack was very all over the map for me, he was so nice and loving one moment, and in a split second that would change.

I really enjoyed the writing, I was fully engulfed in their world and what was happening, and had to know how it ended right away. The pacing was also really well done, and I did not feel lost at all when Alice was going back to her childhood and remembering what she perceived  to have happened back then. It was good to know a little bit as to where she was coming from, but still all of her actions did not add up to me.

I really enjoyed the characters of her Mother and Nan as well. I could relate to how her Mother had acted at times, and it was all pieced together for me towards the end of the book when it was all coming together. There were so many things that Alice was not made aware of that her Mother was going through that I think maybe she would have understood her a little better had she known, but her Nan and her Mother decided to keep those from her, and I guess I understand why, she was still very little.

If you are looking for a thriller with some romance (if you can call it that, it is more a disfunctional relationship), then this book is for you. From the very beginning Alice and Jack's relationship starts off rocky, and truly I don't think that it ever recovered, they were both bringing in baggage to the situation that neither wanted to talk about or deal with, and I think that it doomed it right from the very beginning.

Overall this book gets a 4/5 from me, it had action, romance, thriller aspects, and plot twists that I did not see coming! I highly suggest you look for it coming out in January and put it on your to be read list.

Averil Dean crafts a gripping, psychological, erotic thriller that will leave readers with pulses racing in Alice Close Your Eyes. I quickly became invested in protagonist Alice and all of her inner turmoil. Her sometimes relatable, sometimes singularly experiential traumas left me grasping for resolution. I found that Alice managed to be down to earth and very in touch with reality despite a painful upbringing and somewhat unstable adult life. Set on an island in Puget Sound, the novel is extremely claustrophobic throughout, which adds to the thrill of the plot. The way Alice meets Jack — when he discovers her in his closet after she breaks into his house — is absolutely confounding to read, and thus begins a spiraling romance with immense psychological baggage. While at first Alice and Jack's relationship seems foreign, as though a complete anomaly, Alice's past and present thoughts bring everything in to focus. I found that I was, in tandem, rooting for their relationship to work out and thoroughly fearful for and of both characters.

Alice Close Your Eyes make for an erotic thriller unlike any other. Alice could be any face in that crowd of sufferers. If you're looking for astounding depth of character and relationship, as well as being kept on the edge of your seat the whole way, Alice Close Your Eyes should be the next book on your reading list.

Well that was interesting. **SPOILER ALERT!!**

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS. PLEASE DO NOT READ IF YOU WOULD NOT LIKE ANY CLUES TO WHAT IS CONTAINED IN THE STORY. NO SPECIFIC PLOT LINE DETAILS ARE GIVEN, BUT THERE ARE HINTS AS TO WHAT HAPPENS.

I did not enjoy this book. I found it horrific in many scenes and the characters were disgusting in both personality and habit.
However, the writing style was quite good. I enjoyed the language and the back and forth between present and past. I did not become confused when the author traveled between present and memories.
My biggest problem with this book was the plot line. And no Happy Ever After resolution (although that is just my own desire, rather than a slack on the author's part).
I found the plot line to be lacking. Although the main character was reaching for a goal and achieved that goal, it seemed unconnected from quite a bit of the story. There was too much extra fluff. The stories of Alice's life as a foster, aside from her abuse, did not seem to contribute. I didn't need to know about Michael, and his story didn't contribute to the novel much to me. I also thought it was pointless to continue Molly's story after the initial childhood orphan days when she taught Alice tricks and secrets. This book could have easily been fifty pages shorter and still read quite smoothly for me (I know not everyone agrees).
I found the sex to be forced and unpleasant, especially since the main character was reluctant much of the time. Jack seemed to be doing exactly what Alice's abuser had done to her previously in many scenes, with no concern for how she felt, and assuming she must like it because she was forced into pleasure.
I also strongly disliked the cost of this book. At ten dollars I should be receiving more than two hundred pages.

My overall rating would be 2.5 out of 5. The book read well and had strong writing style, but contained too much fluff. The main characters were well defined and clear, their language and personality was concise (although I hated them both) and the secondary characters were well developed (although sometimes unnecessary).

    50 shades anyone?

I just began reading this book so my review is not complete. My problem is that it is too sexual. I also don't really feel connected to the characters. I feel as if Alice is very similar to the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, dark, pierced and tatted (I have tats and piercings as well, not saying anything negative about that) sexual, confused and driven at the same time, and has a very different style of dress. I wasn't expecting it to be such a steamy, sexual, read when I bought it on a whim at B&N for my holiday traveling. I will continue to read the book (in private as it makes me uncomfortable to read in public) and post if my feelings have changed.

One Heck of a Ride - Not what I expected

Alice has had a rough life. After her mother and grandmother pass at an early age, she is bounced around between foster homes with various levels of abuse. Now that she is an adult, she is a famous author of a young adult series but has some bad habits. She likes to break into homes. She doesn’t take anything but wants to find peoples secrets.

Alice starts stalking Jack with the thought to get revenge on those that wronged her years earlier. Then jack catches her in his house but instead of being mad, he lets her go just to stalk her in return. They then start a dysfunctional relationship that keeps getting more violent.

I have to say that I was not expecting the story that I got from reading the back of the book. This is a very good psychological thriller. I admit that I could not bring myself to like Alice. There were times that I felt sorry for her, but overall I couldn’t really stand her. And Jack just got under my skin. I couldn’t stand him but he was a good match for Alice.

The one part that got to me was the erotica. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with that. The issue was how it kept progressing more violently. I understand it in the overall aspect of the book but it was way too much for me.

This is a surprising book. There is an adequate story with lots of sex but it wasn’t a block buster for me. I do think this is a good for a first book. I will read other books by Averil. But this is going to be one of those like it or hate it books.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

    Hard to put down!
I felt like I was left hanging at the end. I wanted some sort of resolution as opposed yo just an escape from the situation. Great character development...but not all of the pieces to the puzzle were revealed. You were left with several open ended sitations that never really were recitified.
Truly enjoyable novel...I will read more from this author.

Intriguing but ultimately just plain depressing

This book was a darkly intriguing book that kept me interested throughout. However, it kept me interested in hopes that something good and happy would come of this troubled girl's life, but nothing did! Ultimately was just a thoroughly depressing novel
