Children's Literature - Kathleen Karr
A British import, this chapter book has been vetted for curriculum use in U.S. schools by educational and reading consultants and rated at a Reading Level of 2.4. The consultants' additions to the slim book appear to be a glossary, discussion questions, writing prompts, and an introduction to the use of FactHound on "Internet Sites." The story itself revolves around the incredulity schoolgirl Shelly elicits from her teacher and friends when she tells them about her brief abduction by a friendly alien in a spaceship. Convincing her buddy Dan to make a try for his own abduction, he spends an enjoyable afternoon introducing the alien to music and sneakers. Now a believer, too, the book ends as the kids trick Mr. Tann, their teacher, into being the next abductee. Zucker's silly little story might appeal to reticent readers, while Savage's spastic, frog-faced, line-drawn alien manages to bulk out the pages.
