Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 6 UpThis exploration of one of the most enduring puzzles of modern times begins with a description of Barney and Betty Hill's 1961 experience with a UFO and its crew, which is considered to be the prototypical alien-abduction case. Accounts by numerous other self-proclaimed abductees are used to highlight the types of creatures, spaceships, and "medical" examinations commonly associated with alien contact. Unusual descriptions of alien-human hybrid children reported by some abductees lends a strongly sinister note to the more typical complaints of painful tests, terrifying paralysis, scars, and implanted devices. Black-and-white photographs of flying objects, burned and disturbed plants and soil, an allegedly mutilated dead cow, and crop circles illustrate the fact that mysterious occurrences may take place anywhere on Earth. The text, which includes statements by UFO believers and prominent skeptics, presents a wide variety of evidence that allows readers to form their own opinions. Most of the case histories, criticisms, and explanatory theories may be found in other balanced works such as Anne Canadeo's UFOs (Walker, 1990; o.p.) and Michael Arvey's UFOs (Greenhaven, 1989), as can the stock photographs. This volume's strength is its supplementary material: addresses and activities of four UFO-concerned organizations, two bibliographies listing a total of 45 sources, and a finely detailed index. The spacious format, clearly presented nonjudgmental text, and large number of current explanations for these phenomena make this a valuable resource.Ann G. Gr 7-9-While hundreds of people have claimed to have had such an experience, there is still no irrefutable evidence to support their stories. Netzley systematically examines this phenomenon through the eyes of abductees, UFO researchers, psychologists, and skeptics. The well-documented case of Betty and Barney Hill is presented as the quintessential UFO abduction experience, exhibiting what have become classic elements: missing time, unexplained anxiety, memories recovered through hypnotism, visions of bug-eyed creatures, and a painful physical examination. Additional incidents bring out other common experiences like scooped-out gouges in the skin, memories of multiple abductions over time, odd objects found under the skin or in their noses, and contact with human-alien hybrid children. Various theories try to explain these encounters in terms of psychology or alternate realities in addition to hoaxes, dreams, and buried memories of childhood trauma. The theory that the abduction experience represents memories of the birth experience is illustrated with a photograph of a newborn boy being held up in front of his mother's stirrup-spread legs. Other black-and-white photographs show abductees, investigators, and theorists plus artistic depictions of typical human encounters with aliens. Although other books relate more accounts in detail and present some theories about them, few of them are as thorough in analyzing the phenomenon as this one.-Ann G.
