Alien Encounters

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
A good-looking book for kids that love UFO's. Eight different case studies are presented, and the same format is used for each. The reader feels as though this is a stack of related files and not one single story. Each begins with a two page narrative account of the event, and is followed by several more pages of statistics such as; Location, Witness, Description of UFO, and Description of the aliens. The illustrations depict the aliens according to witness' descriptions, and the depictions of the UFO's are especially interesting because they are fairly technical. The introduction encourages readers to keep an open mind, and states, "Are they alien encounters, true events or just clever hoaxes? You be the judge." Unfortunately this is a rhetorical question and the reader is never given a chance to examine alternative explanations and decide. The "clever hoax" theory is never mentioned after the introduction. Although this book is fun, it is also bad science. 2000, The Millbrook Press, Ages 9 to 11, $23.90. Reviewer: Seth Berg
