Editorial Reviews

Midwest Book Review
. . . If there are aliens on the earth then perhaps they are insects with their bizarre appearance and habits . . . I really like the books . . . that have complete English and Spanish texts so a child can build their vocabulary in another language easily. Alien Invaders is a highly recommended children's book with wonderful illustrations and a real pleasure to read.
The Times Record
. . . great read for curious little children, it's a two-fold teaching tool . . . Huggins-Cooper's words paint a picture . . . Bonnie Leick's far-out illustrations. Her masterful use of perspective and shading as well as detailed close-ups, captures the "aliens'" motion superbly and will have adults pausing to soak in the artistry.
Children's Literature
Leick's illustrations are the real stars of this book about a boy who believes the bugs in his backyard are space aliens. Throughout every comparison of the insects to the space aliens, Leick accentuates the described feature, whether it be robotic legs or camera lens eyes. Her insects are otherworldly but non-threatening due to their somewhat anthropomorphized features and movements. Children will enjoy her illustrations and their animated-film style. The book culminates with the little boy doubting his mother's claim that the insects are just insects, but accepting them despite their potential alien status. In this final scene, Leick shows the boy sharing his popcorn while watching television with flies and beetles. The book is a fun read, if only for its illustrations. Children will not learn anything about bugs they did not already know, nor will this book function as an identification guide. But it does include a glossary with key words listed in both their singular and plural forms in both languages, which will certainly help young readers. 2005, Raven Tree Press, Ages 4 to 8.

Kirkus Reviews
A young boy is convinced that an alien invasion from outer space has already occurred: The invaders are insects. He notes their modes of transport (flying and diving), their robotic legs and shiny suits, their eyes like cameras and their underground homes-their overall similarity to aliens on television. The short text is printed in large friendly letters, English above and Spanish below, facing full-page illustrations. Leick's paintings feature life-like and often quite enlarged insects, shadowy settings, and just enough humor to avoid real fright. Not an essential purchase, but one sure to be popular in larger collections. (vocabulary list) (Picture book. 4-7)
