Overview

Make science spring to life with a whir of motors, levers, gears, axles, and propellers!

With six kinetic alien monsters to build, this kit doesn't just feed the imagination but, together with the science-packed companion book, it also explains all the physics and theories behind what makes the models work. This kit will teach children about physics, mechanics, forces, and motion without them even realizing it!

Together the models and the companion book illustrate in a lively and clear way how core scientific principles make things work, from thrust and friction to gravity and lift. And when kids have finished building their robot, they can decorate it with the included cool add-on card pieces that allow for hours of customizing fun!

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heidi Hauser Green
The concept is fanciful: You, the kit builder, must help an alien robot spaceship perform a series of alien spaceship repairs. As you follow directions and build six "intergalactic motorized machines," you'll learn about power and motion. This may happen if you build the robots in sequence. If, however, you are inspired to flip through the book and choose a later alien robot as your first creation (as this reviewer's product testers did), you're in for a bit of confusion. Directions are not repeated, nor are pointers like "see page ##" provided; so if you choose to do the fourth robot first and want to know how to connect the motor wires, you'll need to flip through the book and locate that information yourself. Still, the backstory is intriguing, and readers may enjoy playing along as they build. The kit includes two motors and wires. Some pieces are plastic and foam, but the vast majority are paperboard, more lightweight than cereal-box-cardboard. This set is unlikely to hold up to repeated use and is therefore better suited as an individual gift item than as a library or classroom setting. Handle with care. Reviewer: Heidi Hauser Green
