Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Sam, the sheepdog, fancies herself as an ace detective. Aided by her friend Jennie, the only person who can read her thoughts, she embarks on another misadventure. Unexplained lights going up and down and down and up in an abandoned airstrip have Sam convinced that aliens are about to land and take over the earth. Her bumbling and stumbling unearth very little evidence and almost ruin the opening of an air museum. The disaster is averted only by the quick thinking of Jennie. The fast paced mystery is dialog- driven, with little suspense developed and no clues dropped for the sleuthing reader to pick up on. Sam does not have the appeal of Flatfoot Fox or that hilarious pet menagerie in the Monroe household of the "Bunnicula" books. Fans who have enjoyed Sam's four previous adventures may find this appealing. 2000, Kids Can Press, $12.95 and $4.95. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: Beverley Fahey
School Library Journal
Gr 2-4-The fourth title in a series about a sheepdog that likes to play detective. Samantha's young human neighbor, Jennie, can hear the dog's thoughts (which are italicized in the text) and is willingly drawn into her intrigues. This time, Sam has spotted unusual nighttime lights and activities on Woodford's abandoned airfield and is convinced that aliens are preparing to invade the peaceful town. Sam's suspicious nature mixed with Jennie's curiosity spin them in several directions as they work together, along with Jennie's friend Beth, to solve this puzzle. While their adventures are lively, the resolution seems somewhat far-fetched and implausible. Still, readers who like dog stories mixed with humor and light mystery will enjoy Sam's latest romp.-Janie Schomberg, Leal Elementary School, Urbana, IL Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
