Aliens: Original Sin, Volume 1

( 3 )

Overview

In 1979, science fiction and horror were brought together in director Ridley Scott's classic film Alien. The film follows the crew of a space cargo-ship, the Nostromo, who land on a hostile planet in response to a faint SOS only to discover an abandoned ship with a ravenous alien on board. Alien inspired three movie sequels, and now Aliens: Original Sin expands further on this classic story, bringing back characters like Ripley 8, the clone of Lt. Ellen Ripley, and android Call. It also sorts out unanswered ...

It also sorts out unanswered questions from the movies and raises entirely new ones. Was it just coincidence that the Nostromo happened to pass by the desolate planet? Why was the alien on the crashed ship in the first place? The answers, along with intense action, chilling horror and even deeper questions await in suspense virtuoso Michael Jan Friedman's Aliens: Original Sin.

    Terrible uninspired drudgery

Michael Jan Freidman attempts to revitalize the Aliens novelizations, but ends up taking so many liberties with the franchise that the end result is a poorly executed mess. Original Sin advertises that many burning questions regarding the Aliens history will be answered, finally. The trouble is, they are answered by a man who is seemingly trying to answer his own personal questions about the mystery of the Aliens universe. While the advertisements do play up this supposed 'grand unveiling,' the end result feels nothing more than simple, amateur fan-fiction that you'd see posted on an Aliens fan-site. Jan Freidman takes extreme liberties with the storyline of previous Aliens movies and ends up falling flat on his face almost everywhere. Only 3 to 4 pages are exclusively devoted towards examining these 'burning questions,' and the answers themselves feel rushed, made up on the spot, and made up further as Jan Freidman went along. Jan Freidman also fails in character development. New characters are either cookie-cutouts of previous characters, with little-to-no background or character development, and returning characters such as Ripley and Johner are wooden, blank, and not at all like their movie counterparts. This can best be seen during an excerpt from the book which describes Ripley being able to remember every single one of her past memories, as they were supposedly written into her DNA, along with the Alien DNA mix. It even goes so far as to say that she remembers characters long dead, such as Ash, Kane, Captain Dallas, Newt, Hicks, and Dillon. This flies in the face of Alien Resurrection, which clearly states that Ripley 8 has severe gaps in her memory, as well as emotional autism. The Ripley in Jan Freidman's novel lacks literally any depth, emotion, or purpose other than to serve as a linchpin between this timeline, and the events of the previous Aliens movies. The action itself? Bland, boring, and completely uninspired. Having the Aliens invade and wreak havoc on a botanical colony (well into the fourth quarter of the book) isn't terribly exciting. None of the Alien attacks or deaths are particularly exciting or original, and the entire product seems rushed. If 20th Century Fox decides to release another Alien movie with Ripley as the central figure, I highly doubt they will take the events of this silly book into consideration. Michael Jan Freidman may be a New York Times bestseller, but that realization is a disturbing one, indeed. As I stated at the beginning of this review....this is purely on the level of teenage fan-fiction, nothing more. Avoid this book, or curse yourself for wasting your money on it.

Another addition to the Ripley mythos

Picking up where Alien 4 left off, Original Sin follows Ripley, Call, and the rest of their rag tag crew as they try to figure out what to do with their lives next. It¿s not long at all before the Aliens we¿ve known to fear and despise raise their black obsidian heads, ready to strike. Before the end of the novel, a new crewmember is added and the reader is left with the distinct feeling this is the beginning of a new line of Aliens novels. I think this is a nice solid start to a new line of Aliens books. Frankly, that¿s too long in coming. After coming out with both Aliens and Predator books for a while, they dried up years ago. Their return is most welcome. Fans of the Aliens movies will love these books as they read like extensions of the film. The writing is well executed, with a nice balance of pace and characterization. However, do not buy this if you¿re expecting something new and earth shattering- these are pretty pat. Overall, recommended.
