This new Arabic language textbook program uses a communicative, proficiency-oriented approach with fully integrated audiovisual media to teach modern Arabic as a living language. Intended primarily for college and graduate students but accessible enough for anyone, the series focuses on developing skills in standard Arabic and gradually introducing students to Egyptian Arabic, the most widely spoken dialect in the Arabic-speaking world.
I just received a copy of this text. I have used the the first edition of this text in courses both as a student and as an instructor. The DVD included with the second edition is an excellent addition to this already comprehensive and easy to use series. The DVD is clear, concise and truly adds something the first edition was lacking. Each chapter has vocabulary, dialogues, cultural clips, (signs, background information about Arabic, etc.), as well as writing exercises. The writing exercises (the focus of this introductory text) are scripted completely in Arabic, and the instructor actually shows how to form the letters in initial, medial, final and stand-alone forms, by writing actual vocabulary words. I highly recommend this second edition, and eagerly anticipate the second editions of the other texts that accompany this series.
