It's sad how such an amazing composer can escape becoming a mainstream hit, but then, that's the case for so many people. Alkan's music is so technically challenging, it's even more amazing that real music lies within the tricks show in these Etudes. So, it takes an even greater pianist to surpass the technique, and find the gorgeous ideas beneath. I would have said that Ringeissen was that pianist, until I heard Gibbons, and Hamelin with other Alkan CD's. Still, this a great introduction to the man who has now become one of my favorite piano composers. So unique, surprising, and full of real emotion and drama, you'll want to buy every Alkan CD you can get your hands on
