Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heidi Quist
All About Beagles is good for both those who like to look at and admire dogs as well as the analytical children who like to know all the facts and vocabulary about them. With a table of contents as well as all of the back matter (including a glossary, additional reading, and index), curious minds will find their needs satisfied. The reading level, too, is appropriate for young learners, filled mostly with short words, but with some bigger words for those ready for a little more, including loyal, sense, and popular, to describe this particular breed’s common traits. Of course, all of the other standard information in typical “all about” books comes with the package: the breeding habits, talents, personality, appearance, and needed care. Most of the photos are of the Beagles themselves, and most in this case are the standard tan coat, black back, and white legs. The dogs are all of about the same age, though one picture has a few puppies. A unique thing in this book, though, is the inclusion of a picture of a Beagle at work sniffing out trouble in an airport, which is appropriate for the nature of this breed. A few of the photos have human tracings, including the lower half of a female vet and a young boy. All photos are high resolution and beautiful. Part of the “Dogs, Dogs, Dogs” series. Reviewer: Heidi Quist; Ages 3 to 6.
