Children's Literature - Meredith Kiger
One of five in the "Food Zone" series, this edition, using a variety of interesting graphics and an eye-catching layout, discusses the fruit group of food. Overall, it "describes the growing cycle, how it makes it to your table and why it is important nutritionally." A colorful map of the world illustrates where various fruits predominate. Remaining pages use photos, drawings, and text in scrapbook-like fashion to discuss how we eat fruits, why our body needs them, and how selected fruits are produced. The definition of fruit is nearly identical to that of vegetables in another edition of the series and does not answer that age-old question of the difference between a fruit and a vegetable. Throughout, recipes in metric form and activities are included to provide hands-on learning. It is too bad the growing of blueberries is used as an activity because it normally takes several years before blueberries begin producing which can be frustrating for youngsters. In the section on the growing of grapes, dried currents are described as coming from grapes. Dried currants come from currants, a different fruit, even though chopped raisins are sometimes falsely marketed as currents. A glossary, index, and note to parents and teachers are included.
