Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Suzanne Javid
Rottweilers are calm, loyal dogs named after Rottweil, a town in Germany. They are big dogs with large heads, triangle-shaped ears, and are often called rotties. This title introduces, describes, and beautifully illustrates Rottweilers with full-page color photographs. A strong instinct to protect their owners makes them wary of strangers and they need responsible owners who will train them. A table of contents lists five chapters and while not numbered, each chapter has a consistent heading in bolded font. Done in double-page numbered spreads in an 11 x 9 size with simple and large text, readers are supported in understanding the text through the full-page photographs on the right page of the spread. Readers are also introduced to dog-specific vocabulary defined in a glossary section and will find such words as instinct, guard, responsible, and litter. Younger readers may need assistance in using the nonfiction text features: the table of contents, glossary, read more section, Internet sites (called Fact Hound), and index. Although Internet sites have been researched, adult monitoring may need to be provided for younger readers as they surf the web. Part of the series, “Dogs, Dogs, Dogs” other titles include All about Beagles, All about Boxers, All about Chihuahuas, All about German Shepherds, All about Pit Bulls, All about Poodles, and All about Yorkshire Terriers. According to the publisher, the series supports national Science Standards related to life science. Correlations with Common Core and State Standards are available on the publisher’s website as is a Google Preview. A good choice as an informational book regarding types of dogs, specifically Rottweilers, described and shown at work, play and rest. Reviewer: Suzanne Javid; Ages 4 to 8.
