EDITORIAL REVIEW:

*The All-American Boys* is a no-holds-barred candid memoir by a former Marine jet jockey and physicist who became NASA's second civilian astronaut.

Walter Cunningham presents the astronauts in all their glory in this dramatically revised and updated edition that was considered an instant classic in its first edition over two decades ago. From its insider's view of the pervasive "astropolitics" that guided the functioning of the astronaut corps to its thoughtful discussion of the Columbia tragedy, *The All-American Boys* resonates with Cunningham's passion for humanity's destiny in space which endures today. This is a story of the triumph of American heroes. Cunningham brings us into NASA's training program and reveals what it takes to be an astronaut. He poignantly relates the story of the devastating Apollo 1 fire that took the lives of three astronauts and his own later successful flight on Apollo 7.

This new edition includes an update of the manned space program and his "tell it like it is" observation of NASA's successes and failures. It also includes commentary on the Shuttle disasters of Challenger and Columbia and his views on what NASA should be doing to get back on track and to regain public support.

Highly recommended candid view of international space efforts

Having read just about every book ever written about the Apollo space program, I admit to pre-conceived notions of Walt Cunningham's view of the space program. I had initially considered him having washed himself out of the Apollo flight rotation after Apollo 7 due to the 'shenanigans' perpetrated on the program by the flight crew. However, reality is different. This book, an update of the original book written in the 1970's, is a candid account & excellent insiders view of the space program, both past and present. Cunningham is very qualified to offer the points of view that he does, and he offers an insiders look into how the space race was waged, won by the U.S. & NASA, & then left to flounder as it does today. The triumphs and tragedies are vividly written and it is obvious that he has done a tremendous amount of homework, based on his personal eyewitness accounts as well as the work & research of others. I would highly recommend this book and I applaud Mr. Cunningham's efforts to offer insight into conflicting views given in other astronaut accounts. His book truly brings all of the various puzzle pieces together and is a must-have for any space program officionado.

    WARNING

I would like to warn readers of this book. I am extremelly well versed in this area. Please buy yourself, friends and children other books. This is a book written by an astronaut who apparently has an inferiority complex about his career at NASA. Cunningham was not one of the better known or successful astronauts and takes it out on his collegues and entire program in the pages of this book. We have here insult after insult that completely takes away from the excitement of the time and the special characteristics of the astronauts that attract us to them. Then he takes it out on women at the end of the book explaining that they do not belong in space due to cost and risk, but never explains. He became an astronaut for the notoriety and fame, but does not understand that this is not why most people do it. You would think a person who dedicated much time to the program would be thrilled that it has become high profile, coed and international, however, he is obviously not and appears intimidated instead.
