Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 5-8Two titles that chronicle the history of their respective organizations. Each book contains numerous black-and-white photographs and a fairly substantial list for further reading. Documentation for the texts is provided in the form of endnotes. Quotes and remembrances about the leagues and their players were obtained from other written sources and are featured throughout the books. Negro Baseball Leagues duplicates information found in Robert Gardner and Dennis Shortelle's Forgotten Players (Walker, 1993) and Michael Cooper's Playing America's Game (Lodestar, 1993). Sue Macy's Whole New Ball Game (Holt, 1993) is an outstanding account of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. Hanmer's title gives substantially less information about the AAGPBL, devoting a lot of space to women in baseball before the league's arrival and recent attempts by females to play baseball at all levels from Little League to the majors. Two worthy efforts that could fill a need for libraries where books on the topics are in demand.Tom S. Hurlburt, La Crosse Public Library, WI
