Overview

Bursting with energy, this celebration of childhood follows the familiar activities that bring joy and comfort through a year of nature’s changes.

From the first flowers of spring through the lazy days of summer, the brisk chill of autumn, and the shivery anticipation of blustery, snowy holidays, ALL AROUND THE SEASONS highlights the wonderful things that make each turn in the year unique. Lively verses and exuberant images show children finding fun in everyday pastimes — digging a garden or drawing on the sidewalk, dancing through sprinklers or making s’mores, carving pumpkins or building a snowman beside a house full of twinkling lights. Barney Saltzberg’s latest creation is an ode to the great gifts of nature, to families’ shared memories, and to childhood itself.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Debby Willett
Spring, summer, fall, and winter come alive in rhyming text for young readers. Hatching chicks, playing hide and seek, rainbows, long picnic lunches — these are things found during the spring. Summer time is full of wonderful fun water days, lemonade, making s'mores, campfires, and lots of lazy days. As the days cool into the fall, the rhymes include turtlenecks, kites, leaves, jars with bugs, and of course, Halloween. Of course, winter, the coldest of them all, is depicted just as charmingly. Young readers will enjoy the colorful illustrations and the not-so typical type. Mr. Saltzberg introduces the four seasons visually and with rhyming text. All Around the Seasons is an easy-read young readers is sure to enjoy. Adding this book to any library will be appreciated by young readers. Reviewer: Debby Willett

PreS-K—From the cover illustration to the season-coded endpapers, there is a cyclical quality to All Around the Seasons that reinforces the concept of a changing year. The book starts in spring, with melting snow and chicks breaking free from their eggs, and ends with snow falling and children hunkering down as if in a cozy cocoon. Packed in between are 365 days of season-appropriate activities: gardening, running in sprinklers, jumping in leaves, ice skating. While some of the backgrounds are revisited at different times of the year, therefore showing seasonal change within a set environment, the focus of the book is on the childhood fun that each season provides. This is not a scientific treatment; instead, Saltzberg draws on snapshot moments and sentiment for its appeal. The illustrations, done in acrylic and pencil, have a childlike simplicity that should appeal to young children. Emerging readers might also like to try this book, as the simple verse and large, clear font are easy to read without crowding the pictures. A supplemental purchase in a category that is never out of fashion.—Kara Schaff Dean, Walpole Public Library, MA
Kirkus Reviews
A rhyming salute to the four seasons. Beginning with spring, a parade of multiethnic children leads readers through a stereotypical suburban year in a northern clime: hatching chicks, melting snow, gardening, playing outside, swimming, corn-on-the-cob, kites, leaves, Halloween candy, snow, holidays and hot chocolate. The poem scans fairly well, with rhymes that work: "Backyard explorers, / Bugs in a jar. / An old cardboard box / Is a speeedy sports car." However, the book both begins and ends abruptly- it would have benefited from a few verses to tie the year together. The acrylic-and-pencil illustrations follow the text exactly and clearly show the children enjoying the seasons, each in its own turn. While the verses are made for reading aloud, the details in the artwork will limit the size of the group. Lacking the flare and humor of the stories featuring Saltzberg's usual characters (hamster Stanley and piglet Cornelius P. Mud), this rhyming look at the seasons falls a little flat.
