Overview

One of bassist Ron Carter's better albums as a leader, this CTI LP features a very compact quartet comprised of tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, pianist Roland Hanna (keyboardist Richard Tee sits in on one number), drummer Billy Cobham and Carter. All of the music (even the ballad "Will You Still Be Mine?") has a blues feeling although several are not really blues. However, the quality of the solos is high, and this date lives up to one's expectations.

I recently purchased the long-awaited album "All Blues" by bassist Ron Carter. The main reason for purchasing it was the presence of pianist Roland Hanna, whom I particularly like as a featuring artist. The album is quite pleasant to listen to, but by no means Ron Carter's masterpiece. Roland Hanna himself plays nicely but not outstandingly. Although the sound quality of SHM is pretty good especially in the low pitched notes, I regret paying so much for an album that is finally no different from any other jazz album. I got a 20% discount for opening a Barnes $ Nobles account online, and yet I still paid around $40 for the CD. Looking back, I think I should have waited awhile until the price drops before making that purchase.
