"This detailed examination of the role of the Transatlantic Alliance in support of the America-led military and intelligence operations against the Taliban and the Al Qaida network since the terrorist attacks on the United States provides the first in-depth analysis of NATO's historic first invocation of Article V of the Washington Treaty." "Including a substantial overview of NATO's place in the broad security framework of the Western Atlantic powers and both the shared history and ideals that form its common basis, the book specifically analyzes the political differences among the Alliance partners. The book also looks at efforts to prevent future incidents by expanding the security framework of the Alliance." An essential reference source for military and foreign policy academics, courses and practitioners, this text offers the reader an unprecedented insight into NATO's response to this most significant event.

Lansford's All for One excellent teaching/learning tool

Excellent book on the Alliance's response to the attacks on America on September 11, 2001. Lansford demonstrates the North Atlantic Council's invocation of Article Five, including the transatlantic debates and political implications of the article's invocation. Also covered in detail is the Alliance's military response to the attack and support for US-led action in Afghanistan. What's more, Lansford portrays the Alliance's contributions to the war in Afghanistan in a positive light, as well in detail, which is something one does not get from much of the global media. The first and introduction chapter discusses the book's chapters, but also introduces the reader to the invocation of Article Five. The first chapter covers alliance and regime theory in detail, how states interact with each other and the role of international institutions. The Author presents various international relations theory in pairs, such as realism and institutionalism. The chapter discusses theory and brings in the NATO Allinace to illustrate IR theory. The main point of the chapter is to ready the reader for the chapters to follow. The second chapter starts off with theory in security regimes and that such regimes form the foundation for multilateral bodies and military cooperation. The first two chapters are introduction and theory, making this book good for 'extra-reading' in the college class on international organizations. Lansford's 'All for One' has a nice flow from chapter to chapter. It is an excellent book for first understanding the multinational, intergovernmental security organization that NATO is and how it relates to international political sphere. Along with that, this book offers in depth explanation into in North Atlantic Council's invocation of Article Five in the wake of the September 11th terrorist attacks. Lansford demonstrates that this process was more political and complicated than it appeared on the surface. Lansford uses a nice blend of IR theory and demonstration of the Alliance's response to the September 11th, 2001 attacks to pen this excellent learning tool for students of international relations, the NATO Alliance and its' very first 'call to arms.'
