All I Ask of You

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Andrew Velez
Aspiring singer-actress Barbara Cook arrived in New York in 1948. The natural wonder that is her sumptuous golden soprano thrilled audiences throughout the 1950s and 60s in such musicals as "She Loves Me," "Candide," and "The Music Man." Today, as our premier cabaret singer, Cook continues to defy time, sounding as ravishing as ever. ALL I ASK OF YOU, a tribute to Broadway's legendary composers, is yet another chance for Cook fans to bask in her art, or, for those new to this glorious vocalist, to discover it. Celebrating "A New Sun Up in a New Sky," from the Dietz and Schwartz gem, Cook makes it sound as if there has never, ever been a newer or sunnier sun. Singing ...

Singing from a place of absolute truthfulness, her trilling of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "A Wonderful Guy" becomes the very definition of love and optimism. On the darker side, her stripped-down musing of Arlen and Mercer's "I Wonder What Became of Me" touches a sadness far deeper than tears. In popular music, there is Barbara Cook, and then there are all the others.
All Music Guide - Scott Yanow
A superior veteran cabaret singer, Barbara Cook is in excellent form throughout this set of show tunes. Backed by an orchestra, Cook puts a lot of feeling and understanding into the lyrics of such songs as "All I Ask of You," "The Very Next Man," "In Buddy's Eyes," "I Wonder What Became of Me," and "We'll Be Together Again." And on "Glad Rag Doll" she shows that if she wanted to interpret older swinging standards, she would fare quite well. Her fans will enjoy this well-rounded set.
