Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This book has an old-fashioned feel about it—in the simple and straightforward way information is given. "There are many different kinds of farms. Some farms grow grains," reads the caption on the first page, under a photo of wheat. "This rice farm is called a paddy. Rice is a grain," says the next page. Colorful photographs show farms growing corn, cherries, oranges, tomatoes, pineapples, bananas, potatoes, and other crops; farm workers are shown in the fields, paddys, and bogs. Each page has one to three sentences in a plain type, using a small vocabulary well-suited to early readers. It includes a short glossary/index. Young children who are starting to be interested in where their food comes from will find this interesting. It would work well for a class on farming or gardening, or before a field trip to a pumpkin patch. 2004, Yellow Umbrella Books/Capstone Press, Ages 2 to 6.
