Overview

General anthem for SATB voices, solo, and piano; words by Laurie Zelman; music by Mark A. Miller.

Excitement, praise, and joy best describe this energetic anthem from Mark and Laurie. Pulsating quarter note octaves in the right-hand keyboard part are harmonically punctuated with syncopation in the left hand. This five-measure introduction includes acclamations of “Hallelujah” to prepare the first stanza. The same music is used at points of transition throughout the anthem. Four original stanzas are reflective of Psalm 139, in which the psalmist records his relationship with God, “who knows all about my needs before I ever utter them.” Stanzas 3 and 4 each include modulations that gradually move the tonality up by half steps, concluding in D major. The coda incorporates the opening “Hallelujah” material in an expanded form.

The keyboard accompaniment clearly defines the style, is well-written and easy to follow. The player must be comfortable with syncopation. The harmonic structure fully supports the voices without directly doubling parts.

Performance options include adding instruments to enhance the style, such as an electric bass following the left-hand keyboard part and percussion. This could serve as a response to the affirmation of faith, response to the Gospel lesson, or as an anthem. Consider using this with both youth and adults. For congregational (hymn) versions of this and fifteen other pieces by Mark Miller, see his hymn collection Amazing Abundance, published by Abingdon Press.
A rehearsal/accompaniment CD # 0687326397 is available.

Appropriate days: General worship.
