"His eyes never slumber, and His hands never rest; His heart never ceases to beat with love, and His shoulders are never weary of carrying His people's burdens. ...Wherever Christ is, there is God; and whatever Christ does is the act of the Most High. ... Happy are we who belong to such a shepherd, whose humanity communes with us, and whose divinity protects us. Let us worship and bow down before Him." -Charles Spurgeon

Meet the Author

CHARLES HADDON SPURGEON (19 June 1834 - 31 January 1892) remains highly influential among Christians of various denominations, among whom he is known as the "Prince of Preachers." It is estimated that in his lifetime, Spurgeon preached to around 10,000,000 people. Spurgeon was the pastor of the congregation of the New Park Street Chapel (later the Metropolitan Tabernacle) in London for 38 years. He was a prolific author of many types of works including sermons, an autobiography, commentaries, books on prayer, devotionals, magazines, poetry, hymns and more. Many sermons were transcribed as he spoke and were translated into many languages during his lifetime. Spurgeon produced powerful sermons of penetrating thought and precise exposition. His oratory skills held his listeners spellbound in the Metropolitan Tabernacle and many Christians have discovered Spurgeon's messages to be among the best in Christian literature. He suffered ill health toward the end of his life, afflicted by a combination of rheumatism, gout and Bright's disease and often recuperated at Menton, near Nice, France, where he died on 31 January 1892.

First Chapter

Chapter 1To You

My intention in writing this message is that many will be led to the Lord Jesus. It is sent forth in childlike dependence on the power of God the Holy Spirit to be used in the conversion of millions if He so pleases. No doubt many men and women will read this volume and the Lord will bless them with grace. For this reason, the clearest language has been chosen and many simple expressions have been used. But if scholars should happen to glance at this book, the Holy Spirit can impress them, also. Oh, that some might read this who will become great winners of souls!

Who knows how many will find their way to peace by what they read here? A more important question for you is this: Will you be one of them?

A certain man placed a fountain along a busy road. Then, he hung a cup near to it by a little chain. He was told some time after that a great art critic had found much fault with its design. "But," said he, "do many thirsty people drink at it?" Then they told him that thousands of poor people, men, women, and children, quenched their thirst at this fountain. He smiled and said that he was not troubled by the critic's observation. He only hoped that on some hot summer's day the critic himself might fill the cup and be refreshed and praise the name of the Lord.

Here is my fountain, and here is my cup. Find fault if you wish, but do drink of the water of life. I only care for this. I would rather bless the soul of the poorest street cleaner or rag-gatherer than please a prince and fail to convert him to God.

Are you serious about reading these pages? If so, we are agreed at the outset. But, my goal is nothing short of your finding Christ and heaven. Oh, that we may seek this together! I do so by dedicating this book with prayer. Will you not join me by looking up to God and asking Him to bless you while you read? Providence has put these pages before you. You have a little spare time in which to read them, and you feel willing to give them your attention. These are good signs. Who knows, maybe the time of blessing has come for you. At any rate, "The Holy Ghost saith, Today if ye will hear His voice, harden not your hearts"(Hebrews 3:7-8).

    Awesome

Spurgeon explains what the gospel is so well and beautifully. If you don't understand what Christianity is all about: READ THIS! If you are a Christian and want to spend your time well, read this and sit in awe that there is a God who justifies the ungodly.

The need, way and means of finding God.

Charles Spurgeon, called the Prince of Preachers, has written the best explanation of why people need salvation; How that salvation was provided through Christ Jesus; and How righteousness is obtained for one's soul. If there is one book to give someone to read that can change their life forever then this could be the one. The Gospel found in the Holy Scripture is most important and this book contains and could possibly be the best explanation of what the Gospel truly is. If you've gone to church your whole life and heard preachers and priests speak of the Gospel but never truly understood what that meant then this is the book to read and share. Spurgeon is direct and to the point and oh so simple to understand. Read this book and then buy numerous copies to give to anyone who inquires about the Gospel and God and salvation.
