Overview

In colors as bright as sunshine, Caldecott Honor Illustrator Molly Bang presents a young child who is thankful for the world around him/her.

Few children's book artists can capture the voice and feelings of a young child as well as master painter Molly Bang, the recipient of three Caldecott Honors. Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
A child celebrates his body, senses, emotions and surroundings in this lyrical story, illustrated with crayon, paint and collage art on brown paper bags. Simple images of a boy with yellow felt overalls contrast with finely detailed renderings of his cat and the collaged objects that inhabit his world. Several pairs of the boy's hands are shown petting and playing with the cat: “What grand hands! Thank you, hands, for gripping and throwing and patting and holding. And for hugging.” Crayon lines extend beyond the frame of some pictures, suggesting a work in progress, creation in the making. Caldecott Honor artist Bang (When Sophie Gets Angry—Really, Really Angry...) amplifies this notion in a concluding note about how she created this book, encouraging kids to make their own (“Don't forget to make a cover!”). At times, the book feels like a game for parent and child (“I smell with my... nose,” reads the text as pie, cheese and other odiferous objects float above in a starry sky), but the overall effect is that of a joyful, grateful prayer. Ages 3–5. (Sept.)
Children's Literature - Joyce Rice
Young readers will be delighted to follow the pages of this book as it talks about our feet, our hands, our ears, our heart and what wonderful things they can do. The little boy in the story, let us call him Charlie (although the author does not give him a name), welcomes the reader in an orange t-shirt and yellow overalls, as he shares his orange tabby cat with the reader, demonstrating how our arms can hug. Our knees and elbows are made to bend whenever needed and our head has parts that can sing, hear, taste, smile, and talk. Young Charlie takes the reader through his day, even to the silence of the evening hours, when stars stud the sky. This teaching book presents all the major parts of the body, in childlike drawings, for children to see and talk about. The author then continues to present concepts about emotions and what they look like on a child's face. Although this is a simple, cute story for young readers, it is also a valuable teaching tool. The author's use of crayon and collage work, in illustrating the book, is explained to the reader in summary at the beginning of the book and in detail at the end of the book. Colors are bright and vivid while text is limited to two or three lines per page. There is a multicultural element to the illustrations, making this an easily selected gift book which will also be a great read-aloud wherever the young reader is served. Reviewer: Joyce Rice

PreS-K—A boy, aided by a very patient cat, gives a shout of gratitude to his many body parts that get him through the day. Starting with his feet and taking inventory all the way to his heart, he shows readers each part's basic value to him: "What great hands! Thank you, hands,/for gripping/and throwing/and patting and holding./And for hugging." Large, bright spreads created on paper bags with paint, collage, and red crayon outlines keep the story energized and are perfect for sharing aloud. Homey details abound as the child hugs a cat, kisses his parents, and listens to the activities outside his room. Eventually the text broadens its focus from a celebration of body parts to acknowledge the greatness of the universe and life itself. A concluding section explains how the book was made and how children can create their own books using the same materials.—Julie Roach, Cambridge Public Library, MA
Kirkus Reviews
All toddlers' most fascinating subject (themselves) receives an earnest portrayal as a young child celebrates himself and his world. As he names his body parts each by each, the tyke gives thanks for their useful function: "When I sit down, I sit on my good bottom. / Thank goodness!" The focus then turns externally to the youngster's loving parents, his busy town and the larger universe. Rendered with red crayon outlines, simple figures convey a childlike immediacy within the direct narration. Bold collages emphasize warm tones on textured paper-bag backgrounds, and strategic page turns provide a natural climax. In the most dynamic sequence, the crowded, colorful neighborhood turns to the outlined image of the child's face superimposed on the starry night sky. "I hear a ticking clock. / And in between the noises I hear . . . / SILENCE." An author's note takes readers through Bang's bookmaking process and gives them tips on how to make their own celebrations of self. Joyous. (Picture book. 2-5)
