Overview

East Coast underground rap at its finest, All of the Above showcases why J-Live is so beloved by fans of literate, well-mannered hip-hop. The focus here is on lyrics, through and through, and J-Live indeed serves up a linguistic feast for astute listeners. The pretensions of All of the Above -- from its Coltrane-esque cover art, to J-Live's disdain for commercial-minded rappers, to his thoughtful liner notes -- might turn off some listeners, particularly those less discerning ones who don't share his high-mindedness. But that's why All of the Above is an underground release: it's an album for a select audience that prefers intellect and understated beats over bombast, boasting, booty, and bluntedness.

After being held out of the game because his finished debut record got lost in the mix of some merging record companies and was never officially released, J-Live brings it full force with a mix of good production, great rhymes, a bit of humor and a lot of heart. This is smart hip hop with a message, along the lines of Lone Catalysts, Tribe Called Quest or old skool De La. The difference here is that J-Live has some major chops when it comes to lyrical skill. He can bust a mic with the best of the battlers, which for most artists generally does not translate to good records. In this case however, it's a whole different story, with production by DJ Spinna and Jazzy Jeff's A Touch of Jazz. I know most people haven't heard of J-Live, but you'd be doing yourself a favor to check this out.
