Waltham / University Press of New England, Hanover 2009 Hardcover First Edition. 340 pages. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. ADVERTISING. A lively look at magazine ads ... during World War II and their roles in sustaining morale and promoting home-front support of the war, with lots of illustrations. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor and the entry of the United States into World War II, many commercial advertisers and their Madison Avenue ad agencies instantly switched from selling products and services to selling the home front on ways to support the war. Ads by major manufacturers showcased how their factories had turned to war production, demonstrating their participation in the war and helping people understand, for instance, that they couldn't buy a new washing machine because the company was making munitions. Other ads helped civilians cope with wartime rationing and shortages by offering advice on how to make leftovers tasty, make shoes last, and keep a car in good working order. Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
‘This well-written book documents the important role of advertising during a critical period in US history. Highly recommended.”—Choice

“Jones has written an accessible book with the potential to break out of the academy and appeal to the general public.”—H-Net Review in the Humanities & Social Sciences

“[L]avishly illustrated and superbly produced . . . the reader is treated to a large selection of wartime advertising in periodicals that are hard to find. . . . For those of us who love the sentimentality and unity of ‘the greatest generation, ’ Jones’s book is a real treat.”—Winterthur Portfolio

This is a well-researched and well-written book by an author who obviously has great love for the subject!

I unexpectedly received in the mail an advance copy of this book in early May, which is why this review is appearing so soon after the book's release.

All-Out for Victory is a very good book that is well worth reading, providing an engaging and unique portrait of the American home front during World War II through the eyes of print advertising.

The writing is clear and engaging--no Keeganesque phraseology to wrangle! But at the same time, it is obviously well-researched and thorough, with clear themes and a good attention to pertinent detail. The organization by theme was very logical and aided my understanding of the book's main points. My only minor critique is that a few tables and charts to summarize the contents of the database the author created in preparing this book would have been welcomed.

Perhaps my favorite thing about this book is the copious ads throughout that not only serve to illustrate the author's points, but also give the reader a clear idea of what print advertising was like at the time--something no amount of text could convey. The beautiful artwork of that period really drew me into the book.

If you are interested in the Second World War, and particularly its affect on the American civilian population, this book is certainly worth reading.
