Overview

All Sides Off from the Kingston Trio unites two previously released Kingston Trio albums -- Both Sides of the Kingston Trio, Vol. 1 and Both Sides of the Kingston Trio, Vol. 2 -- as a two-CD set. The biggest problem with this double-disc is the packaging. Silverwolf doesn't provide any credits, liner notes or recording dates, and for a group of the Kingston Trio's stature, that type of sloppiness is inexcusable (even if Silverwolf considers this a budget release). But the problematic packaging doesn't make the recordings any less worthwhile. Although full of songs that made them famous back in the '50s and '60s, All Sides of the Kingston Trio was actually recorded in the '80s. Bob Shane, George Grove, and the late Roger Gambill are on board, and all of them are in good form when they revisit classics like "Tom Dooley," "Greenback Dollar," "Sloop John B," "Tijuana Jail," "M.T.A." and "Reverend Mr. Black." Although not the definitive recordings of these songs, the Trio's '80s remakes are still enjoyable. Other highlights of the double-disc set range from Pete Seeger's "Where Have All the Flowers Gone" to "The Long Black Veil," with the latter a dark gem that was also recorded by everyone from Joan Baez to Lefty Frizzell, Stonewall Jackson and Johnny Cash. All Sides of the Kingston Trio is not essential and isn't recommended to casual listeners, who would be much better off looking for a best-of collection of the group's '50s and '60s hits. But collectors and die-hard fans will find a lot to like about All Sides of the Kingston Trio, even though the absence of liner notes, credits, and recording dates is certainly frustrating.
